BIOGRAPHY

I’ll admit it: I’m an idealist. I believe in the goodness of humanity and the triumph of justice. I love singing along with musical theater and Disney movies. Sunshine, fresh flowers, and happy-endings are high on my list of favorite things. Perhaps my most distinctive features are a ready smile and a laugh that resonates a hundred yards away.
My name is Peggy Tsun-shuin Chiang. I was born and raised in Tainan, Taiwan, and I lived in Madison, Mississippi for ten years until moving to New York. Being what the Taiwanese refer to as a “mixed-blooded child” and a follower of the Baha’i Faith, I consider myself a global citizen. Thanks to my parents and various teachers along the way, I aim to live a life with a thirst for knowledge and an appreciation of beauty.
My love of fashion began as a little girl who loved to spin around in pink princess tutus and plastic pom-pom heels. Eventually, I became frustrated with the limited assortment of styles both for my dolls and toys and for myself. The obvious solution was, “Why not design and make my own clothes?”
After years of sketching, sewing, and studying, I have developed a clean and subtle style. I prefer soft, luxurious fabrics made from natural fibers. My silhouettes and details blend Eastern and Western traditions. Architecture and nature often inspire my color palettes and collections as a whole. I enjoy hand-work, such as embroidery, applique, and knitting.
I strive to create fashion that celebrates diversity, sees the beauty within imperfection, and encourages environmental responsibility. In the future, I would love to create my own fashion label similar to the one that I describe in my thesis. The brand will encourage society to value all types of individuals. I want people to know that they don’t have to dress the way society deems fit; I want to help people dress to flatter their own unique bodies and personalities. Even if I work for another company, I want to do my part in making the fashion industry a more positive creative space that embraces a holistic view of business.
